Lap Band Advantages
Patient-friendly technique:
The Lap Band System is considered to be the least invasive bariatric surgery procedure. Mexico Lap Band surgeon Dr. Alberto Aceves can perform the procedure laparoscopically, resulting in fewer operative complications, less pain and faster recovery. In addition, this weight loss surgery requires no cutting or stapling of the stomach.
Adjustability:
Normally, no additional operation is required in order to adjust the diameter of the stoma. Band adjustment is a regular part of surgical follow-up for this procedure and a feature which may become very important as you lose weight. Your weight-loss progress, as well as pregnancy, illness or other circumstances, may require that your food intake be increased or decreased by modifying the capacity of the stomach. The Lap Band System design allows this to be accomplished without further surgery (as opposed to other surgical methods) by simply inflating or deflating the band.
Avoids irreversible change:
If the Lap Band System needs to be removed for any reason, the stomach generally returns to its original form. Although removal of the Lap Band System is not anticipated, if necessary it can usually be done more easily than can reversal of other procedures, which typically leaves staples and more traumatized tissue.
Reduced hospital stay:
Patients normally leave the hospital within two to four days of the laparoscopic operation, or four to eight days if an abdominal incision is required or if complications occur.
Quicker recovery:
After the laparoscopic procedure, patients usually resume normal activities within a week or two, and within four weeks if the procedure is not done laparoscopically or if there are complications.
