Gastric Bypass Surgery in Mexico

The bariatric weight loss surgery known as gastric bypass, or Roux-en-Y, is considered the Golden Standard of weight loss procedures, and is the only method proven to result in long-term weight loss. This procedure alters the size of the stomach to reduce a patient’s daily caloric intake, and therefore help them achieve weight loss. Dr. Alberto Aceves is an experienced Mexicali / Mexico bariatric surgeon who has performed hundreds of these procedures to help patients achieve their weight loss goals.

Dr. Aceves performs gastric bypass surgery laparoscopically, meaning that he reduces the invasiveness of the procedure by accessing the stomach through a series of smaller incisions, rather than one large incision. During this procedure, Dr. Aceves creates a small pouch within the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be consumed. Patients who undergo this procedure will notice that they feel full and satisfied much faster than before treatment, and they therefore consume fewer calories. This can result in significant weight loss over time.

Gastric bypass surgery is not intended for patients who wish to shed a few pounds, rather it is for individuals who suffer from obesity and the other negative health consequences that go along with it. During a comprehensive consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your condition and discuss whether you are a gastric bypass candidate. If you have tried dieting and exercise but are still unable to lose weight, you may discuss gastric bypass with your surgeon. Typically, individuals who have a BMI over 35 should consider surgical treatment. To find out your BMI, use the BMI calculator.

Being severely overweight can have a negative impact on overall quality of life and result in a number of physical and mental health issues. When performed successfully, bariatric surgery can potentially cure obesity-related diseases, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension (persistent high blood pressure)
  • High cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea
  • Chronic headaches
  • Venous stasis disease
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Liver disease
  • Arthritis

Many patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery are able to shed upwards of 80 percent of their excess body weight. This has a significant impact on their overall health and confidence. It is important to note, however, that gastric bypass surgery is not a quick fix. Patients who undergo this treatment must remain committed to a healthy lifestyle following the procedure in order to sustain the results.

During your consultation at our Mexico gastric bypass facility, Dr. Aceves and his staff will be available to answer any of your questions or concerns, as well as discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure. He will help you make the treatment decision that is best for your circumstances. If you are not a candidate for gastric bypass surgery, he may recommend alternative treatments such as the Lap Band system, duodenal switch or gastric sleeve surgery.
